The Mission

My name is Mariella Hunt and I’m a bluestocking. What does ‘bluestocking’ mean? It is a Victorian term used to describe an intellectual or literary woman.

I don’t know if I can describe myself as intellectual, but there is no denying that I am a literary woman. I need books.

My love for reading started when I was a kid, hiding under my grandmother’s piano with picture books. As I grew older, my reading comprehension went in a new direction.

At the age of twenty-seven, I don’t only read to enjoy a good story. It’s not enough to know what the author put on paper. I want to know about the author. I want to learn about the times.

Call me a bluestocking, historian, old soul. They’re all accurate. I have an absurd fear that on the day I die, I’ll be agonizing about a book I didn’t have time to finish.

The purpose of this blog is to interest people in reading–but not only books. History is important, yet I don’t encounter many people who take time to dig into the past.

I’m in my element skimming periodicals from the 18th century. I like reading letters exchanged by people long dead. It helps me feel that life has a meaning beyond what we see on the surface.

I have no degree in history or certificate in literature. What I am is a writer and bibliophile. These two things give me much to explore. I’ll discover stories from long ago and share them.

Behind every good story is a better story. This blog is my attempt to unearth them and, in the process, become a better writer. Thank you for joining me, and I hope you like what you read!

“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book!”

– Jane Austen
